Level 1: Stroke School
Description:
Swimmers begin in Level 1 Stroke School, where they learn the basics of balance, breathing and the mechanics of all four competitive strokes, plus starts, turns and relays. The workouts are age appropriate with a focus on fun, personal achievement and team unity in a safe, supportive environment.

Age: 10 yrs and under.

Entry Requirements:

  • Push off and streamline to the flags
  • Swim 25 yards of each backstroke and freestyle without stopping
  • Swim 15 yards breaststroke
  • Swim 15 yards dolphin kick/butterfly
  • Use an open turn correctly
  • Use the clock to leave on top, 5 secs apart
  • Be able to get cap and goggles on independently
  • Listen and follow instructions without being disruptive, or distracting other swimmers.

Objective:

  • Focus on drills for all four competitive strokes
  • Use and understand the training equipment
  • Work with clock and basic interval training
  • Streamline
  • Swim an 80 IM regardless of time
  • Basic skills of racing entries, pull-outs & turns. (block training takes place off-island or in the summer)
  • Dryland stretching exercises
  • Introduction to relays
  • Attend a Swim Meet to gain experience.
  • Personal goal setting
  • Be a part of the team


Swim Meets:
This is a competitive level. Swimmers are offered the opportunity to experience meets throughout the session, though it is not a requirement. Please discuss the option with the coach if your swimmer is interested.

Advancement: By meeting the entry requirements for L2 and by coach recommendation following evaluation.
