Off Island Practices
South Kitsap High School
January 23
1:00pm - 4:00pm
Address:
South Kitsap Community Pool
425 Mitchell Ave, Port Orchard WA 98366

During the Fall through Spring season we train at the Vashon Athletic Club. This pool is too small and shallow to conduct all necessary training for competitive swimming. Therefore, we schedule off-island practices at the South Kitsap Community Pool. This allows us to work on block starts, turns and familiarity with a 25/50 yard course. We also use it to throw in a lot of fun and games, as well.

It is an awe-inspiring and luxurious treat to train for a day at such a facility: Although nearly 25 years old, this pool contains all the elements a coaching staff and swim team dream of: 50-meters that can be optionally divided into two-25-yards pools, deep-end, diving boards, diving blocks at either end, and a variable depth floor on one end.

The coaching staff incorporated their personal competitive experience and knowledge in this specialized practice to teach starts, turns and give helpful hints to fine tune stroke mechanics and mental preparation for an event. The younger team members especially enjoy and benefit from this practice by actually learning and practicing with "blocks", if they are ready. Our older and more experienced swimmers often give demonstrations as coaches explain the details.

The practice session is usually ended by a visit to a restaurant where the entire team, family and friends sit down and enjoy everyone's company over pizza. This is a great chance to meet new people, develop friendships and a wonderful team building opportunity.

Even those team members that do not compete the following week in an event, will find the whole off-island practice and pizza-fest experience fun and exciting.

We always invite non-competitive swimmers to come and experience a meet and cheer on their new friends, teammates, and check the sport and the meets. We believe you will find the whole experience exciting and full of action most young kids enjoy. Its free to the public and you can come and go as you wish. We find it helps overcome parents and kids anxiety and fear of competing in the sport.

Carpooling is always encouraged and there are plenty of families that enjoy introducing swimming to new members.
